Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the first annual Safe at Home Luncheon and Style Show presented by the Astros Foundation. The luncheon was held to raise money for charities that help victims of domestic abuse. It was held at Union Station at Minute Maid Park. Union Station is a beautiful room that is perfect for events like these. In one corner, they have a cabinet with memorabilia from the 2017 World Series win.
The first thirty minutes or so allowed time to arrive, register, and mingle. Different charities had booths lining one wall. News crews interviewed all the relevant names in attendance, Astros players, Jim Crane, Reid Ryan, foundation executives, etc. Lunch consisted of a grilled chicken salad and some lavender cake dessert. I’ve never had any food made with lavender before…a little soapy tasting but not terrible. During lunch, Astros sportscaster, Julia Morales, emceed. She introduced Judge Goodwin who told a very touching story of how he came to represent victims of domestic abuse.
The event ended with a style show with clothes from Tootsie’s being modeled by Astros Wives. The ladies did a great job and it was fun to watch the players admiring their wives on the runway. Kemp and Correa especially got into the show. I just happened to decide to start shooting a video right before Daniella, Correa’s fiancee, came out. I’m glad I did. Not only was she wearing a cute dress that I want but I ended up catching a great picture of Correa filming her strutting her stuff. I feel like the picture truly captures their love.
Speaking of Correa, I got a picture with him! I was walking back to my table from visiting the different charity booths and saw him just standing over to the side. I almost went back to my seat but then thought, “What the heck. Nobody is over there. Let me just walk on up.” So I walked over and asked if pictures were allowed. He was super polite and took a picture with me. After I said “thank you” and walked away, I regretted not talking to him. Oh well, there is always next year, right?
