MiParacon 2021

As mentioned in my “MiParacon X” post, I planned to go back to MiParacon in 2020…however, I think we all know how that story goes. So, after a long, two-year wait, I was finally able to return to MiParacon and catch up with a lot of the para-family.

I have said it before and I will say it again, these people are some of the nicest people you will have the pleasure of meeting. Dustin Pari was appropriately placed at the entrance of the main vendor hall. He is a ray of sunshine, so he was the perfect face to greet everyone. It is not surprising that he also gives inspirational lectures across the country and posts motivational videos on YouTube. I worked my way counter-clockwise so the next table I stopped at was the Wraith Chaser table with Mike and Chris. Next in line was Brian Cano. It is always a pleasure to speak with him. He was kind enough to let me interview him for a YouTube show, last year. It was a 7-minute segment but he is so informative and such a fascinating speaker that I had a hard time figuring out what parts to trim to make it fit. Taking up the back right corner of the room was the cast of Ghost Nation. I have known Dave Tango and Steve for quite a few years now. They are great guys but I never seem to get to hang out with them as much as I would like. These conventions are busy! Coming full circle, just adjacent from Dustin, were the Ghost Brothers. I took a picture with them, last time, but I was able to speak with them this year. They are super nice and I hope to see them again. In the hall between the vendor rooms they had a special guest star, Butch Patrick, a.k.a. Eddie Munster. I used to watch The Munsters on Nick at Nite so it was cool getting to meet him. Oh! and I can not forget about the enormous ouija board they had on display!

In the next vendor room over, I caught up with Aaron Sagers. He has an extensive media resume, is the moderator for many impressive celebrity panels at Comic-Cons, and, yet, still has a way of making me feel like I’m just as equally interesting as everyone he has had the chance to meet. For instance, he asked me about a business idea I mentioned to him, previously, and was really motivating me to not give up on it.

Downstairs was another vendor room and the lecture theatre. Two of the vendors in the downstairs room were Dave Schrader and Jeff Belanger. I have known them for 10 years now. They are simply great individuals…and if you let them anywhere near each other, well, get ready for a comedic duo. I attended both of their presentations. Dave actually had to presentations; one with his Holzer Files co-stars and one where he discussed setting intentions. Before his Holzer Files Q&A, he was giving out a couple of books to those who knew “Dave Trivia”. One of the questions was “what location was my first appearance on Ghost Adventures?”. I raised me hand and yelled out “Rolling Hills”. He replied, “Rolling Hills?!!!”, in an “are you kidding me” kind of tone. Just as I was feeling the embarrassment set in, he laughed and said “You are right! Come get your book.” Phew! I had to check my make-up after the Q&A; the laughs were non-stop. You can always count on Dave to bring the humor. I was able to finally meet Shane Pittman from Holzer Files, as well. It was a pleasure. Dave’s seminar on setting intentions was very inspiring. It was interesting to learn how he first got started in radio. I won’t tell all the secrets; you will just have to go to one of his presentations and learn for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. Also inspiring was Jeff’s lecture. He told the story of his trip up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a fantastic story and you can read all about it in his book The Call of Kilimanjaro. Another vendor, who I had never met before, was Mike Ricksecker. He was sitting across from Dave’s table. Just like in 2019, with Brian Cano, I found myself too shy to go talk to him. I waited until the airport to talk to Brian but, having learned my lesson, decided to go up to Mike’s table before the event ended. I am glad I did. He actually does events around the world, including Egypt! I may just have to look into that a little further.

Saturday night was the last chance to hang out with everyone. Why do the weekends have to fly by so fast? I took some last-minute photos with Aaron and Jeff (who said, “look like you don’t know what a camera is”) but never pinned Dave down for one. Dustin introduced me to an EMT named John, who was nice enough to invite me into a picture with him and Dave Tango. Just like that, though, I found myself packing for the return trip home. I am definitely looking forward to the next chance to see everyone.

A Cody Bryan Concert Next to Yorktown Memorial Hospital?…Yes, Please!

After interviewing Cody Bryan, lead singer of Cody Bryan Band (see previous post), I knew I had to catch a live show.  I checked the tour schedule on their website and was thrilled to see that they would be performing in Yorktown, TX.

If you aren’t intrigued with the paranormal then you probably have no idea why I was so excited about getting out to this town.  Let me introduce you to this little, haunted gem…the Yorktown Memorial Hospital.

Built in the 1950’s as a religious, drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, this building was eventually left abandoned.  That is, abandoned by all human residents.  The spirits that decided to stick around have put this building on the paranormal map.  It has been investigated by renowned paranormal researchers, including “Ghost Adventures”.  The owners do provide walking tours of the facility.  Unfortunately, I did not have time to spare.  After all, I had a concert to get to.

Just about a block away from the hospital was my final destination, 5D Steakhouse.  When I arrived, Cody Bryan Band was in the middle of a sound check.  Nothing like getting a show before the show!

20200620_182648 (2)

After the sound check, I took a few shots of the stage area and equipment.  I had the great pleasure of talking with Cody and meeting the rest of the band.  They are truly great, fun guys.  I failed to ask them for a picture, though.  I know, I know.  I don’t know what I was thinking, either.  I just got caught up in the moment.

Suddenly, it was time for the main event.  The guys took the stage and rocked it out.  They performed so many of their hits, such as “Wreck Me”.  This is the very first song on their first album.  It is definitely a great choice to get that album started.  They also performed “Good at Being Bad”.  I had not heard this song before.  However, as soon as I heard it, I loved it!  It is such a fun track.  I immediately went over to the merchandise table and purchased all three albums.  I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss any more musical gold.  Also on the set list was “Small Town Noise” and “Our House for the Weekend”.    “Our House for the Weekend” is the song that introduced me to the band so I am a bit partial to that one.  From upbeat party tracks to laid-back slow songs, Cody Bryan Band does it all to perfection.  Be sure to catch them live, if you get the chance, and check out all of their music, available on all musical platforms.

7 Minutes with Deven: And Cody Bryan Band

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Cody Bryan of Cody Bryan Band for my fourth episode of 7 Minutes with Deven.  I must say, pre-filming nerves were a little higher for this interview.  This was the first guest that I did not personally know.  I heard his music through social media, really liked it, and decided to take a chance and contact his manager.  It turns out that I had nothing to be nervous about.  Cody is as nice as they come.

The video starts out with a clip of “Coast Is Clear”, the latest single.  I LOVE this song!  Then, at the end, Cody brings out his guitar to give an acoustic performance of the song.  Now that I have had a taste of a live performance, I really need to catch a full show.  So do you!  Be sure to check out www.codybryanmusic.com for tour dates, music info, merchandise, and more.

Until next time…enjoy this latest episode!

7 Minutes with Deven: And Dustin Pari

You know him from Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International…you love him…it is the ever-delightful Dustin Pari!  That is right.  Dustin Pari was kind enough to join me for a quick chat.  Did you know that he is a fantastic motivational speaker and even has his own series of inspirational YouTube videos?  Hear all about it in this episode of 7 Minutes with Deven and get Dustin’s schedule on his website www.dustinpari.com.

7 Minutes with Deven: And Brian J. Cano

The acclaimed paranormal researcher, Brian J. Cano, currently of “Paranormal Caught on Camera” fame, was nice enough to chat with me for 7 minutes.

If you ever get a chance to see him at one of his appearances, take it!  He is fascinating to listen to.  You can find a list of upcoming appearances on his website www.neverstopsearching.com.  Until that opportunity comes around, though, you can enjoy this video.  🙂

If you would like to see someone on future episodes of the show, let me know.

7 Minutes with Deven

So I did this thing…haha.

For a while I have been tossing around the idea of creating videos.  I kept putting it off and then circling back around to it.  Finally, I have decided to put all insecurities aside and just go for it.  I created a virtual interview series called “7 Minutes with Deven”.  As implied, all interviews are seven minutes or less.  And, since the title is a play on words of 7 minutes in Heaven, I decided, for now, to film it in my closet.  A bit kitsch, I know, but it made me laugh when I thought about it, so the idea stuck.

My first willing victim, I mean guest, was Brandon Lee, a very patient friend who dealt with all the pains of me figuring out different technical issues that kept delaying filming.  Brandon is starting Brandon Lee Paranormal PI.  He has been investigating the paranormal since he was a teenager but he is launching his own project, now, where he will look more into the history of hauntings and will help those who need help with paranormal happenings in their homes.

Check it out!  Hope you enjoy!

The Holzer Files: A Paranormal Must-Watch

Turn to Travel Channel and you will most likely catch a paranormal show; especially now that it is October.  I am a fan of the paranormal genre.  I have had experiences I can not explain, throughout my life.  Even being a fan of the paranormal, though, sometimes it feels like a little bit of ghost-hunting overload.  The shows blend together.  It seems like the same concept and mostly the same locations, just different faces.  That is why I am so excited about the Travel Channel’s Ghostober introduction “The Holzer Files”.

Holzer1

“The Holzer Files” is a true standout in paranormal shows.  It takes a look back at the files of Hans Holzer, a pioneer in paranormal research, and then has a team of investigators investigate the locations to see if they have similar findings.  It is not just any team, though.  The team consists of David Schrader (paranormal expert, author, and host of Darkness Radio), Cindy Kaza (a psychic medium), and Shane Pittman (an equipment tech).  They are the perfect combination.

Holzer2

The show starts off with Dave sitting down with Gabe Roth, a paranormal researcher, and Alexandra Holzer, Hans Holzer’s daughter.  They pull out the old video and audio reels that Hans recorded and review the evidence.  It is fascinating to watch the vintage footage and to hear the crackling, decades-old audio.  This almost seems to add to the creepy factor.

Holzer4

Cindy and Shane then do a blind walk-through of the location to see if Cindy psychicly picks up on any of the same notes that Hans and his medium did.  Dave watches from monitors and compares Cindy’s findings with the files.  Dave then joins the pair for the full investigation.  Occasionally, there is footage of Dave recording his “Case Log” about what is going on.  I like the production of these scenes.  It is very reminiscent of a spy/mystery movie, like “If you find this footage, this is what happened to me.”

Holzer3

The three balance off of each other very well.  Dave is cool, calm, and collected.  He has done investigations for years.  If he gets rattled, you know it is something truly note-worthy.  Cindy’s readings are very relevant and on point.  She maintains a sense of urgency but serenity when faced with a dark presence or heading a warning.  Shane is the paranormal newbie.  He, therefore, gets the most spooked out of the three of them.  Watching that genuine fear, though, is very relatable.

Only three episodes have aired so far.  If you missed them, go catch up now.  Episode 3 at the Whaley House was crazy!  I can not wait to see what the rest of the season has to offer.  Tune in on Thursdays to catch the new episodes.

BBMak’s Powerstation – Generating All the Musical Energy Fans Have Been Waiting For

BBMak was a pop trio from across the pond that exploded onto the American music scene with the release of their first hit “Back Here” in 1999.  You could not turn on TRL or Zoog Disney (admit it, you remember it) without seeing the guys performing the song in the Underground.  With the release of their first album Sooner or Later, their faces were filling teen magazines and fans’ hearts.  They followed the success of their first album by releasing their second album, Into Your Head, in 2002.  Then, almost as quickly as they appeared, they were gone.  The end of BBMak was official by 2003…or so it seemed.

*Fast-forward 16 years*

Have you ever heard that patience is a virtue?  Well, patience finally paid off.  BBMak has a new album, Powerstation, that was just released on October 11.  To sum it up, BBMak ages like a fine wine.  Their three distinctly different voices somehow blend together into the most beautiful harmonies.  Christian still has that smooth but gritty, edgy voice that he only further developed by supplying vocals to some of the top names in the EDM scene during the BBMak break.  Ste’s voice is still that piercing emotional voice that is perfect for those climatic, emotional musical moments.  Mark is the only voice that seems to have changed slightly.  There is almost a deeper, richer tone to it, now, but still the gentle, mesmerizing voice that his fans adore.  They truly have only gotten better, if that was even possible.  Most songs these days are great because of the production.  BBMak’s songs are amazing simply because of their raw talent.  Powerstation is truly a rare gem.

powerstation

Don’t take my word for it, though.  Let the songs speak for themselves.

Their first single off the new album was “Bullet Train”.

One of my absolute favorite tracks from the album, “Uncivil War”.

Every track is impressive.  This is not an album from which you will want to buy just one or two songs.  So go pick up the album which is available on all the typical platforms or order it from their website and check out the tour dates while you are there.  www.bbmak.com

MiParacon X

Last year, I attended the 9th Annual Michigan Paracon.  I had been told by several of my friends in the paranormal industry that this event was not one to miss and they were absolutely right.  I had an absolute blast.  Therefore, I was left with no choice but to go back again for MiParacon X.

MiParacon is held at the Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.  And yes, that is pronounced “Sue Saint Marie”.  It is not the quickest location to get to but it is totally worth the adventure.  The atmosphere of the hotel portion of the casino is lovely.  It almost feels like you are walking outdoors.  There are stone pathways, rock structures, plants, etc.  Yet, it also is homey with large fireplaces to gather around.  The outside is peaceful, as well.

The event started Thursday evening with a few lectures.  It seems they pulled out all of the stops when it came to this special tenth anniversary.  Grant Wilson, Dustin Pari, Steve Gonsalves, and Dave Tango from Ghost Hunters, Chris and Mike from Haunted Towns, and paranormal radio royalty Dave Schrader were just a few of the celebrities in the the all-star line-up.  They even had the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine and the Ghostbusters Ecto-1.  I must say, I questioned if Scooby was capable of driving.  He looked like he had one too many Scooby Snacks.

Friday and Saturday are the main days of the event.  This is when the vendor floor is open.  Here you can meet your favorite paranormal celebrities, get autographs, and snag those to-be-cherished-forever photo opportunities.

While you are celebrity hopping, be sure that you stop by the other vendor tables.  They have plenty of amazing things to offer.  There are crystals for sale, psychic readings available, paranormal books, and more.  As someone who recently started working a vendor booth at cosplay conventions, I know how important it is to pay attention to the vendors you are not familiar with.  They really appreciate it.

When you want to get off of your feet, stop in and enjoy the many lectures and galleries offered throughout the weekend.  Topics range across the paranormal board from celebrity Q&A’s to demonology to psychic galleries.  While I did not opt in, Friday night, they offered a paranormal investigation offsite.  Saturday night was a special dinner.  The highlight of the dinner this and last year was The Match Game hosted by Ghost Hunters’ Adam Berry.  He is a riot!  I hope they continue that tradition.  Last year, at the dinner, a couple got up on the stage and got engaged.  This year, the convention allowed them to have their wedding at the dinner.  I wish them all the best!

One of the highlights for me is the time after the vendor floor closes.  Since there is a bar on site, everyone tends to end up there until all hours of the night.  It is a great opportunity to just relax, meet new friends, and have a drink.  It seems like every time I go to a paranormal convention, I leave with more friends (like those that snap selfies when you ask them to take a picture for you, haha, see below).  Everyone shares that common bond of the paranormal so it brings us all together.

Knowing that it was a paranormal convention and we would be hanging out at the bar, I wore the most appropriate shirt I could find.  lol

Alas, Sunday always comes too soon.  I must say, the airport amuses me, though.  It honestly could be a house.  You walk into one large room which is ticketing, security, and a one carousel baggage claim, all in one.

If you ever get the chance to head out to MiParacon, do it!  They already have plans for their event next year, so check it out and maybe I will see you there.  🙂

BBMak Concert – May 2019

When I’m in my car, I usually have my MP3 player running on shuffle.  Quite often a BBMak song pops up.  Over the past (I don’t even want to say how many) years, every time I heard a BBMak song, I thought, “Such a shame that they parted ways.  They had such talent.”  Even though I have both American albums, the soundtrack songs (“Don’t Look Down” is my favorite!), and every import I was able to get my hands on, I just wanted more BBMak.  I never knew that desire would be satisfied.

This year, BBMak announced they were back together, have a new album coming out, and they would be going on tour!  *Insert fangirl squeal here*  As soon as the tour ticket date was released, I set a reminder on my calendar.  I wanted to be first to the website to secure my tickets.  When that day finally came, not knowing what kind of ticket options there would be, I put out positive vibes and kept telling myself, “I’m going to meet BBMak!”  The time came to log on and, much to my surprise, there were VIP Meet and Greet tickets offered.  I really was going to meet BBMak!

They released their first single “Bullet Train” and it only added to my excitement.  It is such a great song.  In true BBMak fashion, it is catchy, beautiful, and spotlights their amazing harmonies.  Then finally the concert day arrived.  I took my mom with me.  I used to always play BBMak in the car.  I had her knowing their names, birthdays, etc.  It was only fitting that she get to meet them, too.  I never want to get my hopes up too much prior to meet and greets, though.  I attended an ‘NSYNC meet and greet back in the day and they herded everyone through like cattle and all the security was intimidating.  This meet and greet, though, was amazing!  They kept it to a small group of attendees.  The atmosphere was super relaxed and informal.  When we went in, BBMak started talking to everyone and Christian greeted us all with a hug.  A minute or two later, they gathered us around to play two acoustic songs, “Bullet Train” and “Back Here”.  Their angelic harmonies pierced through the room.  Artists can hide behind synthesizers on albums…voices can be manipulated through mics at concerts…but with just their voices, guitars, and a hollow room, flaws can not be disguised, and there was not a flaw to be found.  Pure, beautiful talent, that is all I can say.

After they sang, we each were able to spend one-on-one time with them.  They are the sweetest, most down-to-Earth guys.  They hugged everyone and engaged in conversations.  I brought along my Cosplur bracelets for them.  I thought, “Hey, I’m going to be tagging them in stuff on social media so why not put a face with the name.”  I figured they would be gracious, say thanks, and then put the bracelets down on a table and toss them out afterward.  Nope!  They immediately put the bracelets on.  When we took our photo together, Mark said, “Make sure the bracelets are showing!”  OK, now they can toss them, right?  Wrong!  Mid-concert my mom tapped me and said, “Look, they still have on the bracelets.”  ❤  That meant so much.  BBMak spreading the Cosplur/Go PLUR Yourself vibes.  (Go Plur Yourself is a phrase I came up with to promote loving yourself for who you are.  More details HERE.) Pics below of the bands on their wrists. 🙂

As if my night wasn’t already made, Christian asked, “So were you a fan back in the day or were you too young back then?”  Of course I had to give him a hug for that one.  I’m only a few years younger than them, though I refuse to admit I’m over 21.  haha.  When I told them my age, they said I look super young.  I knew I loved these guys.  For the meet and greet photos, they had someone taking the pictures.  We could not use our phones.  I was surprised that they did not have an event photographer for this and the concert.  Next time they tour, I need to introduce them to the photographer I work with.  In fact, I am going to be assisting him with photographing the EDM queens NERVO at a show, soon!  (But that is a whole other topic for a whole other post coming in June.)

Photo 22-05-2019, 16 38 57

Soon it was time for the concert.  My mom and I were standing in the second row, center stage.  It was so great to hear all the old songs live.  I saw them perform songs from their first album at Disney World back in 1999.  You can’t imagine how elated I was when tour dates came out that year and it just so happened that their concert was the day that we had planned to arrive at Disney.  Destiny!  I never had the opportunity to see them tour for their second album, though.  I’m not even going to pretend that I remember the exact order of songs for this concert.  I was enjoying myself too much to worry about being that specific on details.  However, I can tell you that they started with “Out of My Heart” and followed it with all of their awesome hits, “I Can’t Say”, “Still on Your Side”, “Sympathy”, and more.  It was super hot and humid in the venue, which the guys mentioned several times.  At one point, a fan yelled, “Take it off!”  Mark proceeded to act like he was going to unbutton his shirt, which sparked giddy screams from the ladies.  He then teased, “Sorry, that’s the next tour.”  I hope you know we are going to hold you to that, Mark.  Hee hee.  During the show they actually introduced two more songs from the album that will be out in August.  One of those songs is “Uncivil War”, which is gorgeous!  I am in love with this song.

20190522_212623

Eventually they took a bow and exited the stage.  Everyone knew there had to be an encore, though.  After all, they had not performed “Back Here”, yet.  Sure enough, they walked back onto the stage.  Mark joked that they seemed to have skipped a couple of songs.  Not only did they end with “Back Here” but they performed “Ghost of You and Me”!  My heart!  I love this song.  I have had an idea for a music video for “Ghost of You and Me” since not too long after it came out.  I finally had a chance to create the video, this year, and I planned to give the guys a copy of it at the meet and greet.  However, last minute, the actor just quit returning correspondence.  I was so frustrated.  I am going to put this video together one day, though.  I wanted to tell them that if they ever find themselves bored in the States, they are welcome to star in it.

As always, time flies when you’re having fun.  Before I knew it, the show was over.  On the bright side, I have a new album to look forward to, in August, AND they said they would be touring again!  I can guarantee I will be front and center.  …and you should be too!  Check out their website HERE to keep up with all of the latest news and to find all of their social media links.
